Because he is an idiot. :D (Oh, and he had just discovered the Fangirls were on his trail... He left because he knew the Fangirls would aim at his weak spot - Bella. )

Just to clear things up, Edward really left because he felt that he was endangering Bella's life and knew...or thought...that leaving was the best thing to do. He thought he was saving her from him.

I don't think he was. I think he was just over reacting. How would you react if your brother/sister were going to try to EAT the love of your existance?
